American Nostalgia. American Pie

Here is the first project that I have done in the ‘American Nostalgia” set.

I took the answers from the survey and looked for the most repeated answer to make a first piece out of, so it could go out in the promotional material.  The answers were so varied that the answer that was repeated the most was only 3.5% of the total answers.
“Pie”

To be fair apple pie was only 5 answers, and the rest were different iterations of pie including “American Pie” the song.  To make the first piece with the greatest cross section of answers, I choose pie.
i decided to make the quilt from scratch.

I made the pie with the recipe that I have been working with for a few years.

My housemate was quite happy that I choose pie for the first project.

I started to sew the pie for the top of the quilt.

I finished the pie topper before I started to sew the flag that I was going to put it on.

I pieced and sewed the pie together first so I didn’t have to contend with the entire quilt to applique on the minutia of the pie.

I made the quilt next. I thought it was appropriate to make the flag out of table cloth material to respond to the pie as well as a bit of the American condition.

Because of the size of the project I had to quilt it in the garage on my hands and knees. that is a working shot of quilting the piece together.

Then it was time to put it all together.

And finally the finished piece:
