Perfect timing for the 4th of July, a flag Quilt project

Posted July 5th, 2010 by Luke

I have been wrangling a flag over the past few weeks.
I wanted to unvail it in its doneness but since the timing is so right.
thought i would post a teaser to show what the process has been:

I think its important to note my car for scaler dimension.
[I realize the travesty of laying a flag on the ground, but this flag is far too large to be measured or seen on any floor or surface I know of. it's 20 feet by 30 feet. It was purchased at the goodwill bins and salvaged from being turned into scraps. i think making a flag out of it is a better fate and the few moments on the ground will be made up for as its displayed with pride across the country in all the best museums...[hint hint hint]]

A little write up I wrote for an article. [on me]

Posted July 5th, 2010 by Luke

thought it may be good to share my thoughts on my role in quilting:
It has been my self appointed task to take quilting under my arm and knock on the doors of the worlds museums and art galleries. I have been working over the past few years to understand the lore and history of the media I tout to the world. I’ve shown quilts nationally for years and only now am I turning to traditional patterning and the ripe history of quilting past. I’m continually fueled by the community of quilters world wide who are so supportive and willing to share their years of experience and knowledge base from a life of oral history and countless hours of practice….

Benji

Posted June 14th, 2010 by Luke

I am projecting an image in fabric.
The project for the Quilt of Benjamin Franklin was proposed to me by my good friend Jesse.
He wanted to see Benjamin sitting on a bed. bantering this idea around for a few years we came upon the idea that we wanted to see the image while the quilt was on the bed. I went to that old stand by from my days of Architecture: Sketchup.

I tried to figure out the geometry to make a projected image such that it was exactly respondent to a person four feet to the right and 6 feet down from the corner of the bed. a week and some dents in the computer later I had a rendering that started to look like what we wanted it to look like. after a bit of work I had an image that worked.

I made a mock up to see if It worked like we wanted.

Tumbling blocks two

Posted June 14th, 2010 by Luke

I liked the look of the last tumbling blocks quilt top I made, but I learned a few things in the process.
I have made another using the same method of clothes into quilt, the difference being the size of the pieces are twice as large.
Lara my assistant on top of the top:

A detail of the piecing:

Once the piece is finished there will be more images.
This piece will have Benjamin Franklin on top.

Agile makes its way into quilting

Posted June 14th, 2010 by Luke

There is a working method called agile used primarily in software development. I have been learning about this process through some graphic design projects I have been working on over the past few months. Now that I am gearing up for my show in October in NYC I have lots of work to do and wanted a way to break down the project into workable pieces as they relate to time.

put op on the wall: arranged into quilts per month with the six steps to finish each:
1) design top
2) design figures
3) piece top
4) piece figures
5) quilt it all together
5) finish [binding, logo, thread picking etc.]
I am aiming for 12 done large scale projects in October.

Red tumbling blocks

Posted June 14th, 2010 by Luke

Here is another project made from clothes into a quilt top waiting for the image to be appliquéd on top.

Here is my studio assistant wading through the pile of reds that will become the top

cutting the clothes into usable pieces:

cutting the pieces into strips to be sewn into the top:

Assembling the pieces into blocks:

the blocks into the whole:

the finished top: [Maggie for scaler reference]

Nube Green

Posted June 14th, 2010 by Luke

I have a bed quilt for sale at a local botique.

Nube Green

The place has an interesting theme. its products are all green. [as in recycled or sustainable local rather than the secondary color combination of yellow and blue]

The quilt I have there is the one made from recycled clothes into the Log cabin pattern.

the bed that was in my studio to show the quilts on:

[Gifts #11] Whale eye

Posted June 3rd, 2010 by Luke

Here is the second small quilt I made for the Alliance for American Quilts annual fundraiser.
I used a Bernina free motion machine to quilt it.
You can see that there are a lot more stitches than I am used to using and in a different pattern, due to the machine.
I didnt worry about the edges I just machined all over each color in the image with that color thread.
I like to send in a self portrait every year to the Alliance.
It’s for both branding and to fuel my ego.

Thumbs up

Posted May 23rd, 2010 by Luke

I have made the first piece for my donation to the AAQ this year.
I tend to use this each hear to try my hand at new techniques and ideas.
[and of course making at least one a picture of me or my logo]

its 16inches by 16 inches, as are they all for the contest. so that collectors can make a collection by getting them year after year.
I advise going over to the website and check what they have to offer and think about submitting a small quilt for the chance at huge prizes.
